In order to fill a liquid crystal device with liquid crystal material, two substrates (12, 16), which carry electrode structures for addressing a plurality of liquid crystal cells and a wall structure (30) extending between the substrates (12, 16) for restricting flow of liquid crystal material in at least one direction, are temporarily held apart by means of spacer members (32), by way of the spaces created by the spacer members (32). After the cavities have been filled with liquid crystal material, the substrates are then compressed so as to cause the spacer members to break in order to bring the substrates and wall structure together. Such a method enables filling of the device in a manner well adapted to the manufacturing process, and ensures that the wall structure prevents free flow of liquid crystal material within the assembled device, as well as providing resistance to shear, thereby preventing deterioration of performance due to mechanical stress applied to the device.

The articles are formed by laminating a pre-prepared first susbtrate (with enclosures and adhesive applied) to the second substrate in a nip and introducing fluid 8 between the substrates at that nip. Particular articles formed are electro-optic display screens eg. LCD panels.

Even when stress is applied to the liquid crystal substance in the peripheral portion of the substrate, the stress is reduced by the partition wall and is not transmitted to the display region on the opposite side of the partition wall. Therefore, even when a crack occurs in the peripheral portion of the substrate due to the stress, the propagation of the crack is stopped by the partition wall, and the crack does not enter the display region.

When forming TFT (thin film transistor) on the insulation substrate, it usually encounters difficulty in high-speed processing for a data signal having a high data rate such as digital display data. In the data processing circuit composed of TFT formed on the insulating substrate, by using level shift circuit 11, the serially input data signals with low-voltage amplitude are raised to high-voltage amplitude and are changed to parallel data signals through the use of serial-parallel switching circuit 12. After that, the level shift circuits 13A and 13B are used again to lower their voltage levels so as to obtain data signals having low-voltage amplitude. Thus, high-speed processing of digital display data with low power consumption is conducted.

When the LCD panel is pressed by an external force or the assembling accuracy of the upper/lower substrates is closed to a design tolerance, it can avoid or reduce the phenomenon of Mura or light leak occurred on the LCD panel.

Columnar spacers are formed on a TFT substrate where a TFT circuit layer is formed. The TFT circuit layer has a TFT and a pixel electrode. A spacing between the TFT substrate and a counter substrate having a color filter, a black matrix, and an overcoat film is controlled by columnar spacers. The columnar spacers are inserted into an overcoat film formed on the counter substrate. Thus, the counter substrate and the TFT substrate are protruded inward. The substrates protruded inward are unlikely to be deformed. When an external pressure is applied or the front window or the like is bonded to the liquid crystal display panel with resin, the counter substrate is unlikely to be deformed by a stress applied by shrinkage on resin curing. Moreover, the number of columnar spacers can be properly set, thereby preventing the occurrence of low-temperature air bubbles. 1. A liquid crystal display comprising:a substrate having a plurality of pixel areas;a first electrode on the substrate in each of the pixel areas;a fine space layer positioned on the first electrode;a roof layer defining the fine space layer between the substrate and the roof layer and including a liquid crystal injection port;a second electrode on a bottom surface of the roof layer; anda supporter on the liquid crystal injection port and divided into a plurality of portions to define a filling space.2. The liquid crystal display of claim 1 , further comprising an alignment layer inside the fine space layer claim 1 ,wherein the alignment layer includes a main alignment layer covering the first electrode and the second electrode, and a surplus alignment layer filling in the filling space and surrounding outer surfaces of the portions.3. The liquid crystal display of claim 1 , wherein each of the portions is in a rectangular prism shape.4. The liquid crystal display of claim 3 , wherein the portions are a same size.5.
