Resistive bridges can connect many ring electrodes in an electro-active lens with a relatively small number of buss lines. These resistors are usually large to prevent excessive current consumption. Conventionally, they are disposed in the same plane as the ring electrodes, which means that the ring electrodes are spaced farther apart or made discontinuous to accommodate the resistors. But spacing the ring electrodes farther apart or making them discontinuous degrades the lens's optical quality. Placing the ring electrodes and resistors on layers separated by an insulator makes it possible for the ring electrodes to be closer together and continuous with resistance high enough to limit current consumption. It also relaxes constraints on feature sizes and placement during the process used to make the lens. And because the resistors and electrodes are on different planes, they can be formed of materials with different resistivities.

A display substrate for a liquid crystal display device includes a substrate, a switching device, a gate line, a data line, a pixel electrode, a plurality of common electrodes. The switching device includes an active pattern, a gate insulation layer, a gate electrode, a source electrode and a drain electrode. The gate line is electrically connected to the source electrode, and the data line is electrically coupled to the gate electrode. The pixel electrode is electrically connected to the drain electrode, and the common electrodes are disposed on the pixel electrode. A coupling capacitance among the common electrodes and the data line can be prevented and/or reduced to prevent a signal delay of the data line. Further, an aperture ratio of the display substrate can be improved by changing a layout of the data line and the gate line.

A transistor with a high mobility is formed using the stacked oxide material and a driver circuit is formed using the transistor.

The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device including a pair of substrates disposed opposite each other, and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the pair of substrates, wherein one of the pair of substrates includes a pair of comb-shaped electrodes, the pair of electrodes are disposed opposite each other planarly within a pixel, the liquid crystal layer contains p-type nematic liquid crystal and is driven by an electric field generated between the pair of electrodes, the p-type nematic liquid crystal is vertically aligned relative to surfaces of the pair of substrates when no voltage is applied, and two or more regions differing from each other in an interval between the pair of electrodes are formed within the pixel.

Image pixels in the display may be controlled using gate lines that are associated with the rows and data lines that are associated with the columns. An electric field may be produced by each image pixel electrode that extends through a liquid crystal layer to an associated portion of the ground plane. The slits in the ground plane may have a slit width. Data lines may be located sufficiently below the ground plane and sufficiently out of alignment with the slits to minimize crosstalk from parasitic electric fields. A three-column inversion scheme may be used when driving data line signals into the display, so that pairs of pixels that straddle the slits are each driven with a common polarity. Gate line scanning patterns may be used that enhance display uniformity.

The first gate electrode layer and the pixel electrode include a transparent conductive oxide.

A vertically aligned type liquid crystal display includes a liquid crystal layer disposed between pixel electrodes and a common electrode and containing vertically aligned liquid crystal molecules, the orientation of the liquid crystal molecules being controlled by an electric field. An orientation controller is formed on the common electrode at a position opposing the pixel electrode and an aspect ratio, i.e., a vertical to horizontal length ratio of the pixel electrode is set to at least 2. Alternatively, the pixel electrode is partitioned into at least two electrode regions so that each region represents a divided pixel electrode. An orientation controller is formed on the common electrode so as to correspond to each divided pixel electrode, an aspect ratio of each divided pixel electrode is set to at least 2. As such, the influence at the edge sections of the pixel electrode is reduced, viewing angle characteristic and transmittance are improved, and average response time is shortened.
