A method is provided for removing an illumination generated shadow in a captured image. An image is captured by an image capture device. Each pixel of the captured image is represented by a respective color value in a logarithmic graph. A non-linear illumination-invariant kernel is determined. An illumination direction for each respective color set is determined in the logarithmic graph that is orthogonal to the non-linear illumination-invariant kernel. A log-chromaticity value of each plotted pixel is projected on the non-linear illumination-invariant kernel. Edges are identified in the input image. Edges are identified in the illumination-invariant image domain. The identified edges are compared. A determination is made whether a shadow is present in response to an edge identified in the input image and an absence of a correlating edge in the illumination-invariant image domain. A shadow-reduced image is generated for scene analysis by a vehicle vision-based system.

Manually-assisted automated indexing of images using facial recognition

The present method relates to the manual assistance for the automated indexing ( 100 ) of a collection of images using facial recognition. In a first automated indexing step, automated indexing of faces within a collection of images is performed, creating sets of faces each of which comprises faces that are determined by the automated process to be representative of the same person. In a second splitting step ( 200 ), sets are displayed to an operator, who determines whether there are false-positive associations within a set. If false-positive associations are found, the faces representing different people are manually split into different sets, hi this way, there will be no false-positive associations within the collection of images, hi a third merging step ( 300 ), sets that have some degree of similarity are presented to the operator, who determines whether the two sets comprise representations of the same person. If so, the two sets are manually merged, thereby eliminating false-negative errors. In this way, all of the faces in the image collection can be completely and accurately indexed.

Inter-object pruning retains the most informative set of descriptors across different objects, by characterizing the discriminability of the keypoint descriptors for all of the objects and removing keypoint descriptors with a discriminability that is less than a threshold. Additionally, a mobile platform may download a geographically relevant portion of the database and perform object recognition by extracting features from the query image and using determined confidence levels for each query feature during outlier removal.

Single-shot photometric stereo techniques are disclosed in which chromaticity is assumed to be a variable. Scene illumination includes three or more spectrally distinct light sources. A scene image is taken with a camera system configured to measure five or more different bands, or channels, of the visible light spectrum. The light sources can include narrow-band colored LED lights, possibly combined with color filters to refine the spectral distributions. In each configuration, a beam splitter assembly is used to align two or more color cameras having different color filters placed over their lenses. By use of such techniques, a single multispectral photograph of a subject provides enough information to recover both the full-color reflectance and the surface normals on a per-pixel basis.

A self-encoded marker where each feature on the pattern is augmented with a 2-D barcode is provided. Hence, the marker can be tracked even if it is not completely visible in the camera image. Furthermore, it offers considerable advantages over a simple checkerboard marker in terms of processing speed, since it makes the correspondence search of feature points and marker-model coordinates, which are required for the pose estimation, redundant. Significantly improved accuracy relative to a planar checkerboard pattern is obtained for both phantom experiments and in-vivo experiments with substantial patient motion. In an alternative aspect, a marker having non-coplanar features can be employed to provide improved motion tracking. Such a marker provides depth cues that can be exploited to improve motion tracking. The aspects of non-coplanar patterns and self-encoded patterns can be practiced independently or in combination.

A content-aware image retargeting technique uses an “importance filtering” technique to preserve important information in the resizing of an image. The image saliency is first filtered, guided by the image itself to achieve a structure-consistent importance map. The pixel importance is then used as the key constraint in computing the gradient map of pixel shifts from the original resolution to the target resolution. Finally the shift gradient is integrated across the image by a weighted filtering process to construct a smooth pixel shift-map and render the target image. The weight is again controlled by the pixel importance. The two filtering processes enforce the maintaining of structural consistency while preserving the important contents in the target image. The simple nature of the present filter operations allow for real-time applications and easy extension to video retargeting, as the structural constraints from the original image naturally convey the temporal coherence between frames.

The present disclosure discloses a method, apparatus, and server for user verification to store a plurality of pictures in a database and define a plurality of rotational directions. The method includes: when receiving from a client a request for a checkcode, rotating a picture retrieved from a database according to a defined rotational direction; after storing a correlation between an identification of the client and the rotational direction of the retrieved picture, outputting the rotated picture to the client; receiving a rotational direction of the picture from the client; finding the stored correlation between the identification of the client and the stored rotational direction of the retrieved picture according to the identification of the client; determining whether or not the rotational direction of the picture returned from the client matches the stored rotational direction. If they match, user verification is passed; otherwise, the user verification is failed. The large number of pictures in the database makes it difficult for enumeration. In addition, by using the rotational direction as identification information to verify user, the safety and accuracy of user verification can be enhanced.

In this paper, we demonstrate that knowledge of where images were taken and where they were pointed makes it possible to visualize large sets of photographs in powerful, intuitive new ways. We present and evaluate a set of novel tools that use location and orientation information, derived semi-automatically using structure from motion, to enhance the experience of exploring such large collections of images.

Robust low-level image features have been proven to be effective representations for a variety of visual recognition tasks such as object recognition and scene classification; but pixels, or even local image patches, carry little semantic meanings. For high-level visual tasks, such low-level image representations are potentially not enough. The present invention provides a high-level image representation where an image is represented as a scale-invariant response map of a large number of pre-trained generic object detectors, blind to the testing dataset or visual task. Leveraging on this representation, superior performances on high-level visual recognition tasks are achieved with relatively classifiers such as logistic regression and linear SVM classifiers.

A system and method for effectively performing an image identification procedure includes an image matching manager that derives source characteristics for a source image and target characteristics for target images. The image matching manager compares the source characteristics and the target characteristics to determine whether the source image matches any of the target images. The source characteristics and the target characteristics may include color-space characteristics and curve-space characteristics from the respective images. A processor of an electronic device typically controls the image matching manager to effectively perform the image identification procedure.

A method dividing an image into plural superpixels of plural pixels of the image. The method calculates an initial set of weights from a measure of similarity between pairs of pixels, from which a resultant set of weights is calculated for pairs of pixels that are less that a threshold distance apart on the image. The calculation calculates a weight for a pair of pixels as the sum over a set of third pixels of the product of initial weight of the first pixel of the pair of pixel with the third pixel and the weight of the third pixel with the second pixel. Each weight is then subjected to a power coefficient operation. The resultant set of weights and the initial set of weights are then compared to check for convergence. If the weights converge, the converged set of weights is used to divide the image into superpixels.
