The apparatus further switching devices capable of connecting a selected high- pass filter in series with a selected low-pass filter, to select a passband having center frequency and bandwidth characteristics defined by corresponding high-pass cut-off frequency and said low-pass cut-off frequency. The selected passband characteristics correspond to one or more selected channels used by the communication system, in a such way that the so connected filters generate a band-pass filtered communication signal corresponding to the selected channels. A manually or electronically operated control device is provided for operating the switching devices according to the selected filters. The apparatus can be build in the form of a portable, pocket-size instrument for field testing, or integrated within a spectrum analyzer. Related methods for selectively band- pass filtering an electrical signal, selectively band-pass filtering a communication signal to be fed to a spectrum analyzer for testing a multi-channel communication system and for spectrally analyzing a communication signal supplied by a multi-channel communication system, are presented.

A filter that minimizes in-band noise and maximizes detection sensitivity of exponentially-modulated signals

The trans-filter compresses in band AWGN, demodulates input signals and has no threshold due to applied noise. Two frequency selective networks with opposite amplitude vs frequency slopes are designed to remain 180 degrees out of phase over the signal band. Output amplitudes are equal at band center and are summed producing a monotonic amplitude vs frequency characteristic going thru zero at center frequency with abrupt phase reversal. This produces the parabolic output noise density and differentiates applied signals. Absence of nonlinear circuit components and product devices prevents generation of noise x noise products, avoiding the threshold phenomenon. Exponentially modulated digital signals produce output impulses due to the slope and abrupt phase reversal. The impulses have strong fundamental frequency components and may be recovered at baseband without frequency conversion. Cascading trans-filters increases noise reduction and impulse amplitude. The trans-filter algorithm may be used separately or in conjunction with one or more hardware trans-filters.

In one aspect, a time division interleaving band-pass filter can be used in voice activity detection, which operates at different central frequencies in respective intervals of a predetermined period of time. The band-pass filter circuitry includes multiple band-pass filtering channels sharing a common transistor circuit, bias circuit and current mirror circuit. The multiple band-pass filtering channels operate in a time division interleaving manner, which enables the sharing of the common set of band-pass filter circuitry components. Thus, the present invention allows a reduced chip area as the area does not increase proportionally with the number of filtering channels. The invention also mitigates the influence of transistor fabrication variations on the filter's central frequencies. Moreover, pulse durations ti are additionally introduced to the determination of the central frequencies, dispensing with the need for matching of current mirror circuits and transistors and resulting in higher accuracy of the band-pass filter's central frequencies.

Discrete Time IIR Filter With High Stop Band Rejection

A novel and useful high-order discrete-time charge rotating (CR) infinite impulse response (IIR) low pass filter is presented. The filter utilizes history capacitor arrays incorporating banks of capacitors. A linear interpolation technique is used in the IIR filter with second order antialiasing filtering, whose transfer function is sinc(x) 2 per stage. It also uses a g m cell, rather than operational amplifiers, and is thus compatible with digital nanoscale technology. A 7 th -order charge-sampling discrete time filter is disclosed. The order of the filter is easily extendable to higher orders. The charge rotating filter is process scalable with Moore's law and amenable to digital nanoscale CMOS technology. Bandwidth of the filter is precise and robust to PVT variation. The filter exhibits very low power consumption per filter pole, low input-referred noise, wide tuning range, excellent linearity and low area per minimum bandwidth and filter pole.

Moreover, a specific design for the channel filter bank 64 utilizing the prototype filter length of the coefficients 640 and the system delay of the samples 319 is provided. The method substantially reduces artifacts due to aliasing resulting from unique modifications of subband signals, for example when using a filter bank as a spectrum equalizer. The method is preferably implemented in software running on a standard PC or a digital signal processor (DSP), but may also be hard coded on a custom chip. The method provides improvements for various types of digital equalizers, adaptive filters, multiband compressors, and spectral envelopes that adjust filter banks used in high frequency reconstruction (HFR) or parametric stereo systems.

A reconfigurable filter includes a splitter for providing an input signal on a plurality of paths. A first path includes a first filter section that can be configured as either a tunable band pass filter with a shunt-connected fixed inductor or a tunable notch filter with a fixed inductor in parallel with a tunable varactor, either of which can be responsive to a control signal. A second path is an all pass section that provides an unfiltered signal. A combiner is provided for combining the first filtered signal with the unfiltered signal for producing a composite signal. The unfiltered signal can have its gain or phase modified in either or both the splitter or the combiner.

In one embodiment, a differential filter is configured using a differential operational amplifier (op-amp) with two feedback RC networks, each RC network coupled between a respective input and a respective output of the op-amp. Two capacitive elements may each provide mid-band positive feedback from a respective output of the op-amp to the midpoint of a respective corresponding resistive element, where each resistive element is coupled to a respective input of the op-amp. The mid-band positive feedback may operate to convert a first-order response of the filter to a second-order response. In one set of embodiments, dielectric absorption (DA) cancellation may be implemented with positive RC feedback from a divided version of a respective one of the op-amp outputs. For cascaded filters, DA cancellation may be implemented with positive RC feed-forward. Transistors coupled across the feedback RC networks may be used to disable the filter, decoupling the filter from other circuit components when the filter is not in use.

A filter that minimizes in-band noise and maximizes detection sensitivity of exponentially-modulated signals

The trans-filter compresses in band AWGN, demodulates input signals and has no threshold due to applied noise. Two frequency selective networks with opposite amplitude vs frequency slopes are designed to remain 180 degrees out of phase over the signal band. Output amplitudes are equal at band center and are summed producing a monotonic amplitude vs frequency characteristic going thru zero at center frequency with abrupt phase reversal. This produces the parabolic output noise density and differentiates applied signals. Absence of nonlinear circuit components and product devices prevents generation of noise x noise products, avoiding the threshold phenomenon. Exponentially modulated digital signals produce output impulses due to the slope and abrupt phase reversal. The impulses have strong fundamental frequency components and may be recovered at baseband without frequency conversion. Cascading trans-filters increases noise reduction and impulse amplitude. The trans-filter algorithm may be used separately or in conjunction with one or more hardware trans-filters.

The band-pass filter circuitry includes multiple band-pass filtering channels sharing a common transistor circuit, bias circuit and current mirror circuit. The multiple band-pass filtering channels operate in a time division interleaving manner, which enables the sharing of the common set of band-pass filter circuitry components. Thus, the present invention allows a reduced chip area as the area does not increase proportionally with the number of filtering channels. The invention also mitigates the influence of transistor fabrication variations on the filter's central frequencies. Moreover, pulse durations t i are additionally introduced to the determination of the central frequencies, dispensing with the need for matching of current mirror circuits and transistors and resulting in higher accuracy of the band-pass filter's central frequencies. As a result, more band-pass filtering channels with different central frequencies can be included for a given frequency range.
