In order to adjust the temperature setting of the thermostat the pulley 17 is connected by a belt 19 with a second pulley 18 and with a temperature calibrated drum 20 associated with the pulley 18 so that rotation of the drum 20 moves the end 26 of the element 13 with respect to the arm 25.

Thermxal switches. - A device for controlling electric circuits consists of a member so designed that stresses imposed by variation in temperature are resisted until these stresses overcome the normal resistance when the member abruptly changes to a shape of opposite curvature. It may comprise a strip, bar, disc, &c. 11, Fig. 2, of two metals joined together by welding &c. and curved as shown. On reaching the critical temperature, the bar &c. suddenly takes the lower curve. The device is shown in Fig. 1 applied to an electric iron, in which the curved strip 23 is inserted in one side of the electric circuit and is supported by brackets 24, 25 secured to an insulating-base 26. The strip makes contact with a member 30 secured to this base in the other side of the circuit. On the temperature rising above a predetermined point, the curve is reversed and the circuit broken; on the temperature falling, the circuit is again closed.

An off-water shutdown protection mechanical heater includes a tube and a cap mounted to an end of the tube. The tube includes therein an off-water protection transducer, one of a relay and a TRIAC, a circuit board including a bimetal plate, and a heating element. When he off-water protection transducer detects a situation of being immersed in water, the one of the relay and the TRIAC turns on to conduct electricity and the bimetal plate detects a temperature of water and undergoes deformation by the temperature to control the heating element to generate heat or not; and when the off-water protection transducer detects a situation of being removed out of water, the one of the relay and the TRIAC turns off to cut off electricity, making the heating element not generating heat. The off-water protection transducer ensures that electricity is quickly cut off upon removal out of water.

An electric element assembly (2) for a liquid heating vessel, such as a kettle, comprises a heating element in the form of an electrically conductive track (4) provided on at least one face (62) of a stainless steel support plate (6) and connectable to a power supply, the track (4) being electrically insulated from the support plate (6), and a temperature sensitive switch (8) capable of electrically insulating the track (4) from the power supply in the event that the temperature of the track (4) exceeds a predetermined threshold value, wherein the temperature sensitive switch (8) is mounted directly on the support plate (6) and in direct thermal contact with the conductive track (4). In a preferred form the temperature sensitive switch (8) comprises an electrically conductive bridge member (20) extending between one end (44) of the conductive track (4) and a respective connection element (12), the bridge member (20) being biassed towards a closed position in which it contacts both the said track end (44) and the respective connector (12), so as to form an electrical connection therebetween.

Thermal protection device has a fixed metallic strip (4) move ble contact strip (3) bimetallic strip (2) heating element (1) contacts (T1) to the heating element (1) and (C1,C2) between the fixed and movable strips. Once a fixed temperature is exceeded the bimetallic strip bends, breaking the electrical circuit (and hence stops any heating mechanism) by moving the movable strip with it. The heating element (1) is of a weakly elastic, flexible material with a resistor enclosed within. As the material is elastic it flexes with the metallic strip, and also maintains close thermal contact with the strip. Once the electrical contact between the two strips is broken a second circuit provides a small heating current to the heater and hence the bimetallic strip.

An electrical heating element for domestic apparatuses, which has an electrical resistance heating element and a heat-conducting heating element support, and whose power supply to the heating element is regulated via a switch which is operated by a bimetallic element, is intended to have a construction which is as simple as possible. The bimetallic element is constructed in the manner of a plate spring as a conical disc (15) and supports a switching pin (16) which interacts with a contact tab (20). For its part, the contact tab (20) is mounted on a contact element support (17). The bimetallic element (15) and the contact element support (17) as well are arranged directly on the heating element support. This not only quite considerably simplifies the construction but also the assembly, and in addition a lower thermal resistance is achieved between the heating element support and the bimetallic element, so that the switch may respond more quickly than previous embodiments, despite the simplified construction. <IMAGE>

A control for engagement with the external base of a liquid heating vessel comprises a carrier mounting two bimetallic actuators at opposite ends thereof. The actuators operate at the same temperature. Attached to the carrier is a moulding which provides a cordless electrical connector for the vessel, as well as mounting switch means operable by the actuators through push rods. The push rod acts on a leaf spring to open the contacts, and upon further movement engages an arm of a trip lever, so tripping the lever and causing a further arm of the lever to engage the leaf spring open the contacts fully.

A thermally sensitive control 2 is provided in or for use in a liquid heating vessel having a sheathed electric heater 92 mounted to a diffuser plate 80 provided on its base 8. The control comprises first 10 and second 12 actuators arranged to make good thermal contact with the vessel base. Biasing means 20 are arranged to exert a variable biasing force on the second actuator 12 so as to vary its operating temperature in use. The actuator 12 engages a region 84 of the diffuser plate 80 which is surrounded by 3 spaced slots 86, 88, and 90 which act to isolate the region 84 from the heater 92 so that its temperature reflects more accurately the temperature of the base of the vessel and that of the liquid being heated inside the vessel.
