The present invention relates to a positive electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery including a nickel-based lithium transition metal oxide having a layered structure, represented by chemical formula 1. In the chemical formula 1, 1 < a < 1.14, b > c, b > d, 0.4 <= b <= 0.9, 0 < c < 0.4, 0 <= d < 0.4, wherein a peak having the highest point among peaks existing in a range of 20°-25° of the diffraction angle of 2θ during X-ray diffractometry of the lithium transition metal oxide is in a range of 21.8°-22.5°, to a preparation method thereof, and to a lithium secondary battery including the same.
