The method for detecting/selecting a region of interest according to an embodiment of the present invention comprises: detecting regions of interest in a medical image using signal strengths which are normalized using signal strength statistics of medical images; selecting candidate regions of interest on the basis of signal intensities of the image; and extracting a final region of interest from among the selected candidate regions of interest on the basis of the signal intensity gradient of the image. Accordingly, a quantitative analysis and approach to a lesion, a blood vessel, or the like can be easily and objectively performed, and a desired region of interest (e.g., blood vessel or cerebral infarct region) not only can be selected more easily, but can also be selected more faithfully without missing even the periphery (e.g., vessel wall region) of the region of interest.

A method for measuring the basal artery index according to an embodiment of the present invention includes the steps of establishing a reference line of the basal artery in an image of the basal artery, selecting a point where the angulation of the basal artery is greatest, and calculating the basal artery index based on the reference line and the point. By this means, the geometrical characteristics of the basal artery are quantified as various indexes to be measured so as to make it easy to understand the form and characteristics of the basal artery as a cause of a brain stem infarction, which is applied to predict the risk and to discover the position of blood vessel atherosclerosis, thus being widely applied to treatment, prevention, and clinical and basic research.
