A pair of motor vehicle tyres includes a front tyre and a rear tyre to be mounted respectively on a front wheel and a rear wheel of a two-wheeled vehicle, each tyre of the pair having a tread band extending around an axis of rotation. The tread band of the front tyre includes a central annular portion straddling an equatorial plane and two annular shoulder portions disposed on axially opposite sides of the central annular portion. A motorcycle tyre intended to be fitted to the rear wheel of a motorcycle. The motorcycle tyre has a tread pattern with a high void-to-rubber ratio that provides a suitable draining. The tread pattern has pairs of primary grooves to carry out the draining function of the tyre, and arranged substantially according to the stress lines of the tyres to reduce the probability of triggering uneven wear. Also included are secondary grooves having a reduced dimension, in terms of both extension and width, arranged between the primary grooves to increase the grip of the tyre to the ground. Orientation of the secondary grooves increases stabilizing features against drift forces acting on the tyre, particularly in low or very low friction conditions.

Moreover, the presence of secondary grooves having a reduced dimension, in terms of both extension and width, suitably arranged, between the primary grooves, increases the grip of the tyre to the ground, whereas their orientation increases its stabilizing features against the drift forces acting on the tyre, particularly in low or very low friction conditions.

Formation of a belt structure (2) takes place by laying down, directly on the carcass structure (3) of a tyre being processed (1), a laying layer (16) formed of a continuous strip-like element (16) of elastomer material directly coming from an extrusion die. The strip-like element (16a) has a differentiated thickness at its opposite edges to give rise to circumferential grip recesses (18) on the laying layer (16). Then, on the laying layer (16) a primary belt strip (6) is formed which is obtained by winding up of a continuous bare cord into coils (6a) disposed in axial side by side relationship. A cord of the high starting elongation type is preferably employed and it is wound up substantially in the absence of tensioning. A covering layer (19) made in the same manner as the laying layer (16) can be subsequently laid down on the primary belt strip (6).

A tyre (1) for motor vehicles, having a tread band (8) extending around a rotation axis (Z) and comprising an annular central portion (A) astride of an equatorial plane (X-X) of the tyre, two annular shoulder portions (B) arranged on axially opposite sides with respect to the annular central portion (A) and two annular side portions (C) each arranged between the annular central portion (A) and a respective annular shoulder portion (B), the tread band (8) having at least one module (Ti; T2) replicated along a circumferential direction of the tyre and comprising: at least one plurality of primary grooves inclined with respect to the equatorial plane (X-X) and arranged at least on the annular portions (B), (C); at least one plurality of secondary recesses arranged mainly on the annular central portion (A) and on at least one annular side portion (C); wherein a substantial disappearance of the secondary recesses determines a difference in the empty/solid ratio on the annular central (A) and side (C) portions between a new tyre and a tyre that has travelled at least 2000 km greater than 1.7%.

The distance in the circumferential direction between an axially inner end of each groove of said at least one pair of second grooves and the first vertex is no greater than 3.5% of the circumferential extension of the tread band.
