Circuit arrangement and method for sigma-delta conversion with reduced idle tones

The circuit arrangement has a sigma-delta converter ( 2 ) for converting an analog input signal into a digital output signal. The sigma-delta converter ( 2 ) contains a loop filter, a comparator connected downstream of the latter and a feedback loop to feed the output signal back to the input signal. To reduce idle tones a dither signal is fed to the comparator by means of a dither-signal line ( 27.1 ). The dither signal is not however generated by a complex dither-signal generator. Instead, what is used as a dither signal is a signal that is available in the circuit but is not specifically generated for this purpose, e.g. an output signal from a second sigma-delta converter ( 2 '). The circuit arrangement is thus simpler and less expensive than conventional circuit arrangements without its reduction of idle tones suffering.

All current steered into dummy load via transistor A; 2. All current steered into Band 1 mixer via transistor B; 3. All current steered into a Band 1 mixer via transistor C, causing 6 dB input signal amplification; 4. All current steered into Band 2 mixer via transistor E; 5. All current steered into a Band 2 mixer via transistor D, causing 6 dB input signal amplification; 6. Like cases 2-5 but with diversion of some portion of current via a dummy load for attenuation of input signal in 1 dB steps.

The circuit arrangement has a sigma-delta converter ( 2 ) for converting an analog input signal into a digital output signal. The shift register circuit arrangement (1), or a finite-impulse-response-digital-digital-to-analog converter for audio technology respectively, comprises a plurality of sequentially cascaded flip-flops (3.1,..., 3.n) connected together in pairs by a data line (2), which elements can be clocked by a clock signal over a clock signal line (7). The flip-flops (3.1,..., 3.n) are then connected together in pairs in series by the clock signal line (7). The connection of the flip-flops (3.1,..., 3n) by the clock signal line (7) is such that a signal on the data line (2) and the clock signal propagate in opposite directions to adhere to the necessary setup and hold times. Due to the delay, which occurs in each flip-flop (3.1,..., 3n), the flip-flops (3.1,..., 3n) are not clocked simultaneously, so that only slight power impulses are developed on the supply lines. Therefore, the circuit arrangement (1) has improved electromagnetic compatibility without separate delay circuits being necessary.

Phase frequency detector having instantaneous phase difference output

A phase frequency detector comprises means for providing Up/Down signals in order to detect a phase difference between detector input signals, and output control means having Up/Down signal inputs for providing a detector output signal containing a measure which is proportional to said detected phase difference, and having capacitor means for providing the detector output signal whose measure depends instantaneously on said detected phase difference. This allows a loop filter which is present in a phase locked loop to have reduced averaging properties and to have a broader bandwidth resulting in a cleaner output frequency signal of a voltage controlled oscillator in the phase locked loop.
