Backing-off lathes.-The machine described in Specification 27694/12, [Class 60, Grinding or abrading &c.], is modified to enable it to cut circumferential relief on gear cutting hobs by the provision of means to move a lathe tool gradually towards the work and quichly away therefrom a determined number of times corresponding to the number of gashes in the hob during each rotation thereof. The tool is adjustably mounted nn a head 3, which is angularly adjustable by slots 3<4>. The head 3 is slidable on ways b<1> on a slide b towards or from the work by means of an adjustable block 3<2> depending from the head engaging a slot c<2> in a lever c pivoted to the slide at b<2>. The cam d engages a cut-away block c<1> so that, as it rotates, the head receives a gradual movement towards the work until the nose of the cam engages the, cut-away part, whereupon a spring imparts a quick return to starting position, the shock beisig absorbed by a dash-pot device c<6>. A worm 37 rotates the work and is carried by a sleeve 38 driven from a shaft 38<3> from the change-speed shaft. The lead, screw for traversing is driven from sleeve 38 through gearing 45, 46, 48. 50, 52, shaft 53. change gears, shaft 55, and gear 56, as described in Specification 27694/12, [Class 60, Grinding or abrading &c.], The cam d is driven from the gear 46 through gear g, suitable change gears, shaft h, gearing h<1>, i, k, shaft 1, gearing n, o' and shaft o<2>, which latter drives the shaft of cam d. Between the shaft and gear n is a clutch formed by a sleeve m on the shaft urged by a spring o against the boss n<1> of the gear n. The engagement lasts while the gear n is free to be driven, but if the gear is held against rotation, the sleeve m rides over the boss n<1>. Thus. for each revolution of the work, the lever c will move the ...
