A method of transferring heat to or from a downhole element comprising contacting a downhole fluid comprising a fluid medium, and a nanoparticle, the nanoparticle being uniformly dispersed in the downhole fluid, to a downhole element inserted in a downhole environment. A method of cooling a downhole element, and a method of drilling a borehole are also disclosed. 1. A method of transferring heat to or from a downhole element , the method comprising: 'a fluid medium which comprises an aqueous fluid; a gas; an ionic liquid;', 'contacting a downhole element with a fluid in a downhole environment, the fluid comprising 'a nanoparticle, the nanoparticle being uniformly dispersed in the fluid.', 'an emulsified mixture of one or more of water, brine, oil, and air; or a combination comprising at least one of the foregoing; and'}2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the fluid medium further comprises an organic fluid.3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nanoparticle is a nanographite claim 1 , graphene claim 1 , a fullerene claim 1 , nanotube claim 1 , a nanodiamond claim 1 , a nanoclay claim 1 , an inorganic nanoparticle claim 1 , a metal nanoparticle claim 1 , or a combination comprising at least one of the foregoing.4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nanoparticle is derivatized to include a functional group claim 1 , is underivatized claim 1 , or includes a combination of derivatized and underivatized nanoparticles.5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the functional group comprises carboxy claim 4 , epoxy claim 4 , ether claim 4 , ketone claim 4 , amine claim 4 , hydroxy claim 4 , alkoxy claim 4 , alkyl claim 4 , aryl claim 4 , aralkyl claim 4 , alkaryl claim 4 , lactone claim 4 , functionalized polymeric or oligomeric groups claim 4 , ionic groups claim 4 , or a combination comprising at least one of the forgoing functional groups.6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nanoparticle is not derivatized claim 1 , and includes a dispersant.7. The method of claim 6 , wherein ...
