The invention relates to a water sensing wire (WSW) for a cable (PCA) wherein the water sensing wire (WSW) comprises a conductor (WC), a water permeable insulation (WI) surrounding said conductor (WC) and wherein said conductor (WW) is formed by a plurality of metal wires (WW). The water sensing wire (WSW) may also comprise a plurality of filaments (WRFI) contained inside the water permeable insulation (WI). Therefore, longitudinal and/or radial application of stresses cannot cause a damage of the water sensing wire (WSW) because damages can be avoided by the deformable cross section of the sensor conductor and by the reinforcement provided through the filaments (WRFI). The water sensing wire (WSW) in accordance with the invention is particularly useful in power cables but may also be used in telecommunication cables or optical fibres.

The power wire is configured for transmission of electrical energy. The fault detection unit is configured for detecting an electromagnetic field emanated by the power wire, and the monitoring unit is configured for detection of degradation in an isolation of the high voltage conductor. The monitoring unit is connected to the fault detection unit and is configured to receive an electrical signal induced in the fault detection unit, which electrical signal is induced as a result of a degradation of the isolation of the high voltage conductor. Thus, degradation of the isolation of the high voltage conductor may be recognized at an early stage.

When presence of a water tree is determined, the control device generates a control action associated with repairing or replacing the second and/or third cable.

Over the entire length of the line ( 5 ) the construction of the line includes at least one light conductor ( 10 ) which is connected in the operating position to an evaluating unit ( 12 ) coupled to a switching element ( 11 ), and is integrated in the screen ( 9 ) of the line ( 5 ), or is arranged directly underneath the screen ( 9 ) of the line ( 5 ) while being in contact with the line ( 5 ), so that damage to the line ( 5 ) leads with certainty at least to a deformation of the light conductor ( 10 ) which leads to a signal which can be recognized by the evaluating unit ( 12 ).

The thermal overload protection, for a low voltage cable, consists of a length of fuse wire, (2) laid inside the cable next to the current carrying conductor or conductors. The far end of the fuse wire is connected to the conductor and the continuity of the so-formed circuit is monitored. Excessive heat developed in the cable at any point causes the fuse wire to melt locally and to break continuity. In a three-phase three-core cable the fuse wire is located along the axis in contact with all three insulated wires. The end of the fuse wire may be connected to one or to all three cable wires.
