Pirns or tubes.-In the manufacture of paper pirns or tubes of varying taper, particularly applicable to pirns as shown in Fig. 6, having an acutely tapering part a on which is superposed a less acutely tapering part h, the parts a and h are formed of separate pieces of paper, the part a being wound on a mandrel and the part h tucked in as shown in Fig. 5, and wound on, the whole being secured by adhesive. The parts a are cut from a strip o, Fig. 8, of paper from a. roll O which is fed over a supporting face 305 covered with flannel and is printed upon by a type block 299. Adhesive is applied along one edge by a grooved wheel 293 dipping in a trough 294. A brush 295, Fig. 7, is used to remove excess of adhesive. The printed and gummed paper strip then passes through rollers 283, 284, over a roller 334 and through rollers 257, 258 grooved to receive guide wires 261, Fig. 7, to guide the paper to the cutters p, u, 29 by which the edges c, g, b, e and b, d, Fig. 3a are produced. The piece of paper a so obtained is seized by grippers 67<a>. 66<a>, Fig. 12, and carried thereby to the mandrel 138 and released, the traverse of the grippers being effected by a cam 82 operating on a lever 84 which through a spring link 87 reciprocates a block 68 on which the grippers are mounted, release of the paper being effected by depressing an arm 81 of a detent 75 by a lever 79 operated by a cam 78. When the paper a is wound up mto the condition shown in Fig. 5, a piece of paper h from a pile H, Fig. 14, is lifted by a suction plate 153 connected to a suction pump by pipes 159, 161, and carried with its wider end into position to be wound up with the remaining unwound lip of the piece a. Adhesive for the winding of the paper is supplied by a brush 200 having a gumming part 199 extending over the length of the pirn, a gumming part 201 extending over the length of the part h, and a part 200 extending over the whole length for removing the excess of adhesive. The finished pirn is stripped from the mandrel and falls through the table 9 into a suitable receptacle. The type block 299, Fig. 8, is inked by a roller 300 made to rise and fall to and from a roller 301 revolving in contact with a roller 302 which forms one side of a bath of ink. 'The blades p, u, and 29 are moved by cams or tappets 35, 36, 37, Fig. 7, against the action of springs.
