Magneto-electric machines for ignition in internal - combustion engines are constructed with field magnets made in the form of arcs of circles, the armatures comprising a number of radial arms each wound with a primary and secondary coil. The field system consists of two sets of magnets h<1>, h<2>, separated by an air space j and having pole-pieces i. The armature comprises laminated arms a, detachable for winding, the primary coils being connected in series and to a contact-breaker e, and the secondary coils in series or parallel to a distributing brush l. The contact - breaker is operated by an internally-faced cam, the number of points of which, as well as the number of stationary distributor contacts, is equal to the number of cylinders. The stationary members of the distributor and contact-breaker are attached to a casing n, which, together with the magnets, is revoluble for timing. The number of poles and radial arms may be varied for different numbers of cylinders, and in a magneto for a single cylinder engine, the distributor is replaced by an axially - arranged brush bearing on a terminal connected to the sparking-plug.
