In a transmission system in which two lines are alternately connected to a single storage device, the device has a variable time constant. Thus when a plurality of subscribers are connected over lines of different lengths whereby the attenuation of the signals on any particular line is greater than or less than a certain " standard " value for the system, variation of the time constant of the storage device in dependence upon the nature of the line in use, causes that device to act in effect as a positive (infinite) or negative impedance vis as an attenuator or as an amplifier. A " resonant transfer " technique is used for passing information into and out of the storage device LC, the variable time constant being provided by " resistor " R. The natural frequency of the LC circuit should be equal to an integral multiple of the frequency at which gates ZS<SP>1</SP> or ZS<SP>11</SP> are closed which latter frequency itself should be at least double the highest frequency to be transmitted and the natural period of oscillation for the circuit l, L, C, should be twice as long as the period for which a switch ZS<SP>1</SP> or ZS<SP>11</SP> is closed. It should be noted that the opening of gate ZS<SP>11</SP> occurs at a time midway between successive openings of gate ZS<SP>1</SP>. A mathematical discussion in respect of the attenuation introduced by positive and negative values of impedance R is given in the Specification. A transistor circuit which may be automatically biased to act as an amplifier or attenuator in dependence upon the lines used, is described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown), this form of control being particularly useful when the storage device is connected to a highway of a time division multiplex system where rapid adjustment of the time constant of the device in respect of each time slot is required. The use of pulse shaping networks between the inductances l1 or l2 and their corresponding switches ZS<SP>1</SP> or ZS<SP>11</SP>, which networks serve to convert sinusoidal waves from the capacitors c1 or c2 into square waves whereby the total signal power passable by the switches may be increased, is also mentioned. Specification 969,252 is referred to.
