[Class 39 (i)] A compact source metal vapour electric discnarge lamp is provided with an electrode consisting wholly or largely of carbon in graphite form. This electrode is provided with a shield, which may be in the form of an annular flange thereon, to intercept the convection stream of metal vapour ascending from the regions of the arc and electrodes. The electrode may be manufactured by heating under pressure a paste made of carbon powder and a binder that will carbonize on heating. It is supported by a helix of tungsten wire which is mounted on a supporting tungsten rod. In an example a 10 K.W. lamp running at between 60 and 120 volts, has cylindrical electrodes of length 25 millimetres and diameter 15 millimetres. The supporting helix may be wound from wire of about 1.5 millimetres and the supporting rod is 4 millimetres in diameter.
