[Also in Division C] An actinide oxide nuclear fuel material is prepared by precipitating from an aqueous solution of an actinide salt the actinide peroxide using H 2 0 2 , forming an aqueous sol from the precipitate, gelling the sol and calcining the gel in the production of the fuel material. The salt may be the nitrate, the aqueous solution thereof containing free HN0 3 . The precipitate may be filtered and washed, an aqueous slurry having an actinide concentration of less than 1 molar being formed which slurry is then peptized and heated to give a peroxide sol of a concentration greater than 1 molar. Plutonium nitrate is exemplified, its aqueous solution being 0.5 5 molar in free HN0 3 , and 10 molar H 2 O. Solution is added to give a mole ratio of H 2 0 2 /Pu = 30. The precipitate may be washed with demineralized water. The aqueous slurry may be 0.12 molar and it is peptized at 80-85 C. for one hour. Ultrasonic wave energy may be used to peptize the slurry.
