Each of the coarse grains has ¢-<SP>2</SP>/ 3 of its volume disposed in the intermediate layer and the remainder in the outer layer. Suggested compositions for the layers 3, 5, 8 include (a) nickel, iron and tungsten carbide and (b) tungsten-carbide and cobalt, and it is stated that in making the working head in a graphite mould the layers are impregnated with melts of copper, copper and nickel, copper with nickel and zinc or copper, silver and zinc after they have been pressed. The coarse abrasive grains may be of, e.g. natural or synthetic diamond or cubic boron nitride and are 1-2À5 mm. in size and the fine abrasive grains may be of like materials to the coarse grains or of tungsten carbide and are 50-800 microns in size. Layers 3, 5 normally have a combined thickness equal to the size of the coarse grains.
