An oscillating rake cooling bed for rolled metal rods 3 comprises stationary toothed rakes and movable toothed rakes 1 supported and reciprocated along inclined ramps 12, 13 and is characterized in that the stroke of the movable rake in the feed direction is longer than the length of the surfaces 2a of the teeth of the stationary rakes. The movable rakes 1 are carried on beams 5, 6 with support rolls 10, 11 mounted beneath them. The-movable rakes 1 are reciprocated by means of three rolls 19, 20 which are reciprocated (direction B in Fig. 2) transversely by the rod feed direction between a plate 23 mounted on the rakes 1 and a wedge 21 fixed on the ramp 13, the inclined surface 20 of the wedge converging towards the plate 23, Fig. 2 (not shown). The rollers 19, 20 abut the plate and the wedge and hence any reciprocable movement of the rollers causes the roll 11 to reciprocate along the ramp 13. The rods 3 are fed into a groove in the fixed rakes (position C), the rake 1 is moved in the feed direction and the edge 1b of each tooth pushes the rods 3<SP>1</SP> along the surfaces 2a of the teeth of the fixed rake (position D). Since the stroke of the rake 1 is greater than the length of the surfaces 2a the rods 3<SP>11</SP> fall on to the surface 1a of the rake 1 during the forward stroke and are deposited against the surfaces 2b during the return stroke after which they fall on to the surface 2a. The surfaces of the rakes may be covered with soft heat-resistant strips, e.g. synthetic material containing carbon graphite or silica. It is essential that the surfaces 1b project above the surfaces 2a by a distance greater than the radius R of the largest rods to be fed otherwise the rods could travel back over the teeth.
