In making gratings from crossed alloy or high carbon steel wires or rods, the wires or rods are electric resistance welded at their crossing points and joining pads of weldable material are inserted between the wires at these points. A transverse alloy steel wire 4, Fig. 1, is arranged on a longitudinal alloy steel wire 3 with a jointing pad 5 e.g. of soft iron arranged between them and spot welding electrodes 1, 2 apply pressure and supply current to deform the pad, but insufficiently to bring the wires into contact, and effect welding. The pad may have opposite domed, conical or pyramidal surfaces and a pad in disc form may be employed. Alternatively the pad may have corrugated surfaces as in Fig. 5 with the corrugations on one side normal to those on the other. Wires of different diameter may be welded when a frusto-conical pad is used, the larger surface being in contact with the larger wire. The pads may be of low carbon alloy steel with the addition of elements Mn, Cr, Ni, Mo, Nb, Si, A1, Cu or Co and may be made by flame cutting strip, wire or rod or stamped from sheet or plate or may be cast or sintered.
