The snifting g a s and liquid are passed into one or more separating - chambers in free communication with the gas-holder ; the gas or a portion of it expands and returns to the holder while the liquid passes away. The arrangement is such that the liquid remains in the chamber a sufficient length of time for the gas in solution to be disengaged. In operation, a snift valve b, on the pipe a through which the liquid passes to the bottling-apparatus (not shown), is operated in the ordinary way by a lever c, and the snifted gas and liquid pass through a pipe e to a chamber d. The gas passes back to the holder through a pipe f, and the liquid escapes through a pipe g and non-return valve h. The pipe g is bent up, as shown, so that the liquid only escapes on reaching a desired level. A second similar chamber i may be used, and the liquid may be heated to drive off the gas in solution. For dealing with liquids containing syrup, a filter is arranged in the chamber d. The filter consists of animal charcoal n placed between perforated plates m covered with asbestos cloth. The purified liquid issuing from the filter serves to wash the gas ; or the gas may be passed through pure water on its way to the gas-holder.
