Slipping of wheels, preventing.-To prevent side-slip of motor-omnibuses and other vehicles, a medium that will offer resistance to the lateral motion is applied in the rear angle between the wheel and the ground, the point of application being thus to the rear of a vertical line through the centre of the axle. Fig. 1 shows one arrangement, in which the resisting-medium is a trailing loop of chain g<1> which, when the slip occurs, is pulled forwards by the driver by means of a lever j so that it becomes wedged under the rear part of the side of the wheel that faces the direction towards which the skid is taking place. When travelling on a good road, the chain can be held up out of contact with the ground by a cable h. Various other arrangements in which the chain loop is employed as the resisting- medium are described. In one modification, shown in Fig. 3<a> in plan, the chain is divided into two loops by an intermediate length of chain g<*1> which trails in the circumferential recess between the two twin tyres. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4, a single length of chain g<1>, attached at its front end to a strut g and stay g<2>, trails in the recess between the twin tyres, the action being automatic. In Fig. 10, the resisting-medium shown consists of a bar g<1> bent round the back of the wheel and carried by the hinged strut g. In Fig. 16, the resisting- medium shown consists of a pair of rollers g<1>. In other arrangements, it consists of a brush and of a block of raw hide.
