Chimney and ventilating-shaft tops.-Wind-directed cowls are mounted upon roller or ball bearings exterior to the shaft, so as to leave the interior free for the passage of the sweep's brush. A band c is secured round the pot and may carry three or more rollers d, mounted upon ball or other antifriction bearings and preferably of such shape that they keep the cowl co-axial with the pot. The cowl b carries a ring e bearing upon the rollers d and another ring f engaging the under-sides of the rollers, the lower ring being connected to the upper ring or to the cowl by bridge-pieces g. The band c may carry a flange forming a race for ball bearings, which may replace the rollers, the upper ring e being suitably shaped, and one or more cages being employed to retain the balls in place. The cowl is preferably semicylindr:cal and has vanes i, h.
