Impression surfaces.-The impression surface is formed of a number of independently-yielding areas formed by strips wound or placed side by side upon a fluid cushion &c. Figs. 1 and 3 show a surface formed of a helically-wound wire or strip 1 upon an annular pneumatic or liquid pressure cushion 2, on a cylinder 3 in which cushion pressure may be produced in a suitable manner. The strips 1 may be of square or round section. Rollers 7 are provided to prevent the cushion and strip from bulging out of place, as they are pressed on to the forme 10. In a modification, the impression surface is formed by a helically-wound flat strip, or a set of rings, placed on edge and forming a cylinder, rollers such as 7 being used therewith. Fig. 12 shows an arrangement in which a number of separate fluid pressure bags or cushions 6 are used, in which case the rollers 7 might be dispensed with. The strips 1, Fig. 12, may be sinuous or corrugated strips placed on edge, such as are described in Specification No. 12,981, A.D. 1900.
