Vacuum cleaning - apparatus. - Relates to a form of apparatus which is also adapted for cleaning or disinfecting by means of a jet or spray of water or other liquid. The apparatus consists generally of a rotary pump a, preferably of the well-known crescent-shaped chamber type, a combined centrifugal separator and filter b, a receptacle l containing a porous substance saturated with turpentine or other disinfectant, and a tank m containing a cleaning-fluid such as soap and water, the whole being mounted on a suitable carriage i. The dust-laden air from one or more suction nozzles enters the separator b through one or more tangentially-directed inlet pipes c, circulates in a downward direction in the annular space surrounding an inner tube d, and enters the tube d through holes d<2> near the base, where it may pass through a coarse filter comprising a bed of small coke, granulated cork, or sawdust carried by a perforated tray d<1>; it then passes inwards through a filtering-tube e of calico &c. secured to circular flanges f, one on each end, and retained in position by longitudinal wires f<1>. The purified air passes to the pump by way of a perforated tube g and union a. The separator is preferably formed with a detachable top b<3> and a conical bottom b<1> with a dust-discharge outlet b<2>. To enable the apparatus to be used at will for suction cleaning with or without disinfection of the dust-laden air, or disinfecting and cleaning by liquid sprays, the inlet pipe c is fitted with a valve box k providing passages k<1>, k<2>, k<3>, k<4> leading respectively to the tank m, the atmosphere, the delivery side of the pump, and the disinfectant receptacle. Multiple-way cocks c<2>, c<3> are provided at the junction of the passages and are operated to open the desired passages as will be readily understood. When cleaning by liquid sprays, the pump delivers air into the tank m, which displaces liquid through the delivery pipe m<2>, a flexible tube, and a suitable nozzle.
