Stuffing-boxes. - The packing for a piston-rod consists of two or more clamps a, each divided into two parts having at their ends lugs b<1> through which connecting-bolts d pass. Springs are interposed between the lugs b<1> and the nuts e of the bolts d. The lugs b<1> enter slots in side blocks i, and have screwed projections h to receive nuts h<1>. Lugs j on the blocks i engage with the bolts j<1> of the stuffing-box, and so hold the clamps a in a position to break joint. The clamps a may be lined with white metal. They are enclosed in a box k, which is held in place by its cover k<1> and the stud bolts j<1>. The inner joint r<1> of the box is packed by the flange r of a gland u. The flange of a bush inside the gland is pressed against the inner clamp a by springs n received by recesses in the gland. The box k is hinged, and can be opened without removing the cover k<1>.
