Casting and moulding.-Relates to the moulding of rice-bowls, and other flat hollow-ware, and consists mainly in means for attaching the runners to the patterns, which are used in conjunction with the frames described in Specification No. 8036, A.D. 1902. Fig. 11 shows a runner a, which has a projection fitting a recess in the plug d, in the bottom of the pattern. This plug is held in position by brackets e, and a plate f, and can be rotated, against the action of a spring, which returns it when set free. Before the runner is put in place, the opening in the plug is closed by a spring-pressed plunger g. The runner shown at k is used when the bowl is to be formed with a shallow boss as shown at m in Fig. 10. A boss n is formed on the pattern, and is connected to a plate p, secured to the pattern in the manner described above. Surrounding the boss is an annular plug s, in which are two recesses to receive projections q on the runner. An opening c is made in the runner to allow the sand to be rammed round the boss. The recesses in the plug are filled as before by spring-pressed plungers r, and the plug is provided with a spring as described above. The runners are made of some heavy metal or alloy, so that they fall out when the moulding box is inverted, and the frame y is rotated to remove the rollers z, as described in the previous Specification.
