Circular knitting- machines.-The machine is stopped either directly by means of the handlever 13, or indirectly by the failure or faultiness of yarn through a rod 24. The yarn supports two detectors 17, 15 pivoted at 17<a>, 15<a> to a hanging lever 19 resting against a stud 23 on the rod 24. The detectors in falling depress a poised pawl 20 into the teeth of a continually - rotating ratchet 21. The lever 19 is thus turned on its pivot and shifts the rod 24, which knocks out the hand-lever 13 and allows a spring to draw a detent 11 into the teeth of a ratchet 7 forming the central part of a friction clutch. In the case of fast-running machines a brake can also be applied. The ratchet 7 is mounted on balls which run from the shallow part of their race to a deeper part when the ratchet is arrested, thus releasing the outside parts of the friction clutch. The lever 24 may also be operated by a hook-ended lever 26 mounted close to the circle of needles.
