Points and switches; crossings.-Rails 13, 14 forming railway points and rails 15,16 forming the rail crossings are mounted on the three plates 17, 40, 41 respectively, which are movable laterally and simultaneously so that the rails register for the main line or siding. As shown in Fig. 3, the plate 17 is carried by rollers 23<a> mounted in bearers 21 which rest on depressed sleepers 19 and on the sleepers 20<a> at the sides, where they support the overhanging ends 11, 12 of the rails which act as guides to hold down the plate. A pin 25 projects from the underside of the plate 17 into the slotted end of the bell crank 26, which is pulled over by a point rod 18. The end of this rod 18 is slotted so as to afford sufficient lost motion for its camshaped end 39 to depress levers 38, which carry locking-bolts, before operating the bell crank. The construction of the two plates 40, 41 at the crossing is similar, but they are caused to move in opposite directions by means of a rocking lever with slotted ends engaging pins on their undersides, and a rod 50 connecting the bell crank 26 under the point plate with a similar bell crank under the plate 40 causes their simultaneous operation.
