In a working element, e.g. a heating resistor, as in the parent Specification, i.e. having a first zone composed at least in part of molybdenum-silicon alloy such as molybdenum disilicide normally operative at 1400- 1700‹C. and a second zone normally operative at 300-700‹C. of material other than molybdenum-silicon alloy, the second zone consists of titanium disilicide attached to the first zone by welding. The element is for use in an atmosphere comprising, oxygen. The first zone comprising a rod of molybdenum disilicide has its ends thickened for the welding on of titanium disilicide so that the temperature of the joint does not exceed 1350‹C. during use but is at about 1000‹C. The welding of the titanium disilicide takes place at above 1350‹C. for about a minute, and an intimate combination occurs at the fused and welded joint. An aluminium contact is fused on to the titanium disilicide, the working temperature of this joint being about 200‹C.
