Shuttle-changing mechanism. - The shuttle box comprises a grooved base plate 5 shown in plan in Fig. 1, a rear wall 7 pivoted at 8 and a front wall 9 carried by arms 10 and supports 12 from a shaft 13, the rear wall being moved by spring action into an inclined position to deflect the incoming exhausted shuttle out of the loom. The rear wall acts on and raises the front wall to enable a fresh shuttle to be inserted by a push bar 44 from a magazine. The rear wall is normally locked and can only be unlocked in a definite position of the lay, so that the shuttle change can only be started in this definite position. Various parts of the mechanism are made yieldable to prevent damage in case of jamming &c. Initiating shuttle change. A weft fork 2u pivoted to a support 26 on the breast beam has its tail part acted upon by a cam-controlled lever to tilt the fork at alternate beat-up movements of the lay (when weft is necessarily not present in front of the fork). At the other beat-up movements, the weft normally tilts the fork, but if it is broken &c. a bar on the fork remains in position in the path of a lever 23 on a shaft 22 on the lay. The shaft 22 is thus worked and a flexible lever 21 acting on a spur 20 of a detent 19 tends to release this from a tail piece 18 on the rear wall 7. This release is, however, delayed until an abutment 27 on a forwardly-projecting rod 28 on the wall 7 engages the breast beam and thus momentarily frees the part 18 by moving it to the right. Weft feeler mechanism may be used instead of the weft fork to cause shuttle changing when the weft is substantially exhausted. The part 28 may be made telescopic &c. so as to yield if necessary. Shuttle - ejecting arrangements: checking shuttles. As the lay moves back, a leaf spring moves the released rear wall into the inclined position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the incoming shuttle being thereby deflected from the box and being held temporarily between the wall 7 and a supplementary braking-tongue 51 pivoted about the same pivot 48 as the usual braking-tongue 47. A spring-controlled part 60 may be used to check the entering shuttle. The braking-tongue 47 has a tail piece 49 for acting on a lever 50 fixed to the usual tongue for stopping the loom. The tongue 51 is operated by an independent spring. It can co-operate with the lever 50 and with a movable or fixed stop 52. Other arrangements of checking tongues are described. The exhausted shuttle is released and falls from the box when the wall 7 returns to normal position. Raising the box front. The front 9 is normally held down and locked by a spring-controlled detent 36 engaging a catch 35, but when the wall 7 moves into deflecting position, the part 28 releases the detent and a roller 30 on a part 29 on the wall 7 engages a cross piece 11 extending between the arms 10 and raises the front to receive a fresh shuttle. The front is held in its raised position by a detent arrangement described, which is released to allow the front to fall, when the rear wall returns to its normal position. A modified device for raising the box front is described and shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings with the Specification. Shuttle-feeding arrangements. When the front 9 is raised, a cam 37 on its pivot 13 turns a charging lever 38 pivoted at 39 and raises a roller 40 into position to engage, when the lay moves forward again, with a transferring lever 41, which operates the push bar 44 to feed a shuttle from the magazine under the opened box front 9 into the shuttle box. The advancing bar 44 engages small ramps 65 on spring-controlled bars 63, thus lowering shuttle-retaining catches 62. These enable a wrongly-inserted shuttle to return to the magazine, the lever 41 having a spring-controlled broken joint 66, which can yield to prevent damage. A ramp 68 on the bar 44 engages rollers 69 on one or more levers flexibly pivoted at 70. These apply stops 71 to the upper shuttle to retain it suspended until the push bar returns. A lever 72 returns the parts to normal position. As the roller 40 may engage with the underside of the lever 41, this is hinged at 59 so as to be movable upwards, but not downwards. The charging lever may be controlled directly by the box back. In the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) it is stated that thread testing arrangements may be used which cause shuttle changing to occur after a number of picks. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
