1,241,323. Stripping rolled material. W. G. S. SMITH, and W. G. S. SMITH. 14 March, 1969 [14 March, 1968], No. 12502/68. Heading B4B. Apparatus for stripping web material from a roll, e.g. of paper for repulping, comprises a frame 1-8, an arm structure 15 pivotable about a first horizontal axis 16 on the frame 1-8, means 11, 12 for locating the roll on the frame with its axis spaced from and parallel to the first axis 16, and stripping means on the arm structure 15 positioned substantially the same distance from the first axis 16 as is the roll axis during stripping, the stripping means being movable axially of the roll by driving means. Stripped paper falls through an opening "A" leading to a re-pulping machine (not shown). The frame 1-8 includes a rocker assembly 2 pivotable on pins 6 under the control of air cylinders 13, so that after engagement by lips 10 under the ends of a core shaft projecting from the roll, the roll may be raised to be rolled freely into position at the clamping means 11, 12. The stripping means comprise plough blades 23 carried on an endless belt 22 drivable by a motor 25 to produce a series of surface rips, e.g. of about 1/16 inch depth, as the arm structure 15 is lowered towards the roll axis. Dashpots 28 supporting the arms 15 are controlled by valves 33-35 governing fluid flow from an air-oil tank 29 having a three-way valve 30 linked to a compressed air source, the arm structure 15 being so balanced that the rate of movement of the stripping means towards the roll axis increases as the roll radius decreases.
