A coating composition comprises a functional component and a fluorescent additive. The wavelength of the peak fluorescence emission of the additive is greater than 500nm under visible, ir or uv excitation. Preferably the peak wavelength is greater than 600nm. The additive should be one whose fluorescence is unquenched by the coating component and is preferably a fluorescent dye such as rhodamine 101. The coating component may be wax. The addition of the flourescent material enables the thickness of a coating to be measured.
