Chlorinated residues containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms obtained in the production of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons are vaporized and further chlorinated by introduction into a fluidized bed of particulate material and reaction with chlorine at 250‹ to 700‹ C., with simultaneous introduction into the fluidized bed at a controlled rate of at least one aliphatic hydrocarbon or additional chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon which reacts exothermically with chlorine, thereby controlling the temperature of the fluidized bed. The additional reactants specified are monochloroethane, 1,2-dichloroethane, chloroform and 1,2,2-trichloroethane. The fluidizing gas may be the chlorine, optionally diluted with hydrogen chloride or nitrogen, or may be air, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, hydrogen chloride or a vaporized organic compound, e.g. perchloroethylene. The vaporized chlorinated residues may be partly reacted and the exit gases then led to a further reactor, in which case the fluidizing gas may act as a diluent for the later reaction. The fluidized bed may also act as a heat-exchange medium or catalyst, and may be sand, alumina, microspheroidal silica, glass, metals, metal carbides, silicon carbide, hard dense carbons, or chlorination catalysts supported on talc, kieselguhr, carbon, silica or alumina. Feedstocks specified are residues from the production of vinyl chloride, trichloroethylene and perchloroethylene. Examples describe the chlorination of (a) a residue from the manufacture of trichloroethylene consisting of perchloroethylene, tetrachloroethane, pentachloroethane, hexachloroethane, tetrachlorobutadiene, pentachlorobutadiene and hexachlorobutadiene; and (b) a residue from the manufacture of perchloroethylene comprising trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene, tetrachloroethane, hexachloroethane, tetrachlorobutadiene ...
