In a conveyer system wherein articles, e.g. coils of metal rod, are moved by dogs on a first chain conveyer into a position where they are picked up by dogs on a second chain conveyer, the dogs on the first conveyer are retractable and a series of delay stations at which the dogs can be retracted is located in advance of the position at which the articles are picked up by the dogs on the second conveyer, control means being provided whereby if one of the delay stations or the pick-up position is occupied by an article the dog at the preceding delay station is retracted. As shown, there are two first and two second conveyers, each conveyer comprising a pair of chains. The first conveyer chains 16, 17 are fed at irregular intervals with coils of rod from pouring reels 11, 12, laying reels 13, 14 or coarse pouring reels 15. The coils are fed by pivoted dogs 22 on the chains 16, 17 to delay station C where they are transferred by a dog 34 on each of two transfer chains 33 into positions where they are picked up by dogs (not shown) on respective second conveyer chains 18, 19 which in turn deliver them to a transfer conveyer 20 adapted to place them on hooks on a further endless conveyer 21. A scaper chain conveyer comprises an endless chain 16 adjacent one side of a trough 30 and a plurality of scrapers 18 mounted beneath the chain by means of pivot pins 20. One end of the scrapers bears against a wall 28 of the trough to maintain the scrapers transverse of the trough during the forward run and the scrapers are pivoted parallel to the chain during the return run. The return sprocket 4 is so mounted that during the transition from the forward run to the return run the scrapers on engaging a pin 38 are pivoted to pass underneath the sprocket. The trough framework 34 totally encloses the return run of the conveyer and has an overhang 42 in the forward run to protect the chain from the conveyed material and also to prevent upward movement of the scrapers. The scrapers may have a rearwardly inclined leading face and the free end may lead the fixed end in the direction of conveyance.

Abstract of the Disclosure Rows of bottles are conveyed on parallel running belts. Closed loop flexible members such as roller chains, run in vertical planes along the longitudinal edges of the belts in the same direction as the belts. The closed loop chains have stabilizing devices mounted to them for stabilizing the bottles in each row as they move along on the belts beyond a bottle infeed region. The stabilizing devices each constitute a pair of fingers that are pivotally mounted to pins that stand up from the closed loop chains and are spring biased so that they diverge at a predetermined angle from each other when they are not restrained from doing so. As the sets of fingers are carried around on the chain, they reach a region where the bottles are deposited on the belts. At least in this region, the fingers of the stabilizing devices arrive between parallel plates which cause the fingers to pivot towards each other in an overlapping relationship so that they are clear from the pathway defined by the belts. After the bottles advance in a row, a small distance from where the fingers are restrained, the fingers emerge from between the plates and the springs cause the fingers to diverge at an angle from each other and establish contact with bottles on the belt to stabilize them. The fingers swing in a horizontal plane so they use none of the head room above the bottles, thereby allowing for a more compact conveyor system.

Apparatus for feeding relative to a molding machine a continuous stream of pallets arranged end-to-end, characterized by the provision of pallet drive means including endless conveyor means upon which are pivotally connected a series of spaced driving elements each of which includes a nose portion for engaging an appropriate rearwardly directed face on the pallets, and a follower portion adapted for engagement by stationary cam track means. The cam track means includes an inclined first portion that converges at an acute angle toward the horizontal axis of the upper run of the conveyor means, and a second portion that is generally parallel with said axis. When the follower portion of a given drive element engages the first track portion, the drive member is pivoted from a retracted position forwardly relative to the conveyor means to drive the pallets at a speed greater than that of said conveyor means. When the follower portion engages the second track portion, the drive element travels at the speed of the conveyor means, and consequently the faster travelling pallets-which are now driven by a subsequent drive element whose follower portion is in engagement with the first track portionprogress out of engagement with the nose portion of said given drive element.
