A phase modulated continuous wave (PMCW) multiple input multiple output (MIMO) radar system is described herein. The radar system is configured to compute range, velocity, and direction of arrival angle of objects relative to the radar system. The radar system includes several transmitting antennas and several receiving antennas, where selected transmitting antennas simultaneously transmit radar signals based on the same modulation signal. Per transmitting antenna, the transmissions are modulated with respective phase offsets on a per pulse repetition interval (PRI) basis. Hence, a coupling between phase shifts over PRI and transmitter positions is established. Effectively, then, each transmitting antenna is labeled with a velocity offset that corresponds to the phase rate of change assigned to the transmitting antenna. This approach is referred to herein as velocity-labeled multiplexing (VLM).

In an embodiment, an integrated circuit device includes transmit components and receive components, a low-band transmit interface connected to output a first signal at a low-band frequency, a high-band transmit interface connected to output a second signal at a high-band frequency, a low-band receive interface connected to receive a third signal at the low-band frequency, a high-band receive interface connected to receive a fourth signal at the high-band frequency, and mixers connected to upconvert the first signal at the low-band frequency to the second signal at the high-band frequency for transmission from the high-band transmit interface and to downconvert the fourth signal at the high-band frequency received at the high-band receive interface to a fifth signal at the low-band frequency, wherein the upconversion and the downconversion are implemented using a conversion signal at a conversion frequency.

The techniques of this disclosure describe a scalable cascading automotive radar system that generates a common oscillator signal enabling consecutive chirps to be output more quickly and precisely than any previous cascading automotive radar system, thereby reducing phase noise and improving performance. The scalable cascading automotive radar system combines a respective LO signal output from at least two primary transceivers to distribute the combined signals as a common oscillator signal to be input to all the transceivers of the radar system. Thus, settling time and resetting times that otherwise occur between chirps generated by other automotive radar systems are reduced because the common oscillator signal is no longer constrained to a single LO signal from a single primary transceiver.
