A method for use in an access point (AP) that supports the IEEE 802.11ba protocol , the method comprising:transmitting a frame including a physical layer (PHY) preamble to one or more stations (STAs) over a channel, wherein the PHY preamble comprises a plurality of repeated modulated legacy signal (L-SIG) fields to spoof a recipient of the frame and protect a wake up signal (WUS) to be subsequently transmitted by the AP; andtransmitting the WUS to a at least a first STA of the one or more STAs, wherein the at least the first STA is a IEEE 802.11ba compliant STA.2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of repeated modulated L-SIG fields cause at least a second STA of the one or more STAs to set its network allocation vector (NAV) claim 1 , wherein the at least the second STA supports an IEEE 802.11 protocol other than IEEE 802.11ba.3. The FTN modulation scheme may be employed both temporally and in frequency (e.g., the frequency spacing of the channels may be tighter than the Nyquist frequency spacing condition. FTN signaling also may be used as a method to control/coordinate interference between different nodes. For instance, if a node uses FTN, more pulses may be packed into a given period in the time domain and/or more channels may be packed into a given bandwidth in the frequency domain, hence some parts of the band may be vacated for use by others, use by the same node for additional channels, or used with reduced power. The interference control/coordination may be extended to time and frequency. Such FTN schemes may be used with different types of multicarrier systems. 1.
