Java (RTM) development Toolkit version 1.1x (JDK) does not support the serialisation of images, but does allow primitive data types to be serialised, that is, primitive data type objects, including objects comprising primitive data type components, can be written to a file or another area of memory, before an application closes; when the application reopens, the primitive data types can be de-serialised and so recovered. According to this invention, an image object is converted into a primitive data type object and then serialised so that the image object can also be made persistent. In a preferred embodiment, the image object is converted to an array of integers representing the image pixels; a colour table of unique integers is created from the integer array; each integer in the integer array is converted into an index in the colour table; and the combined colour table and array of indices are compressed before serialisation.

A method and apparatus for adjusting the display scale of an image

Graphical applications usually allow an image to be displayed according to a display scale. A method of adjusting the display scale during modification of the image in such an application is disclosed. The method comprising the steps of responding to user selection of a modification to be performed on said image by storing the display scale. Then adjusting the display scale during modification of the image; and responding to user completion of the modification, by returning to the stored display scale. In a preferred embodiment, the velocity of a pointing device is measured and the display scale adjusted as a function of the velocity of the pointing device during graphical modification before the display of the image is re-centered on the pointing device position.

Method and apparatus for adjusting the display scale of an image

In a graphical application which allows an image to be displayed according to a display scale, a method of adjusting the display scale during modification of the image. The method responds to user selection of a modification to be performed on the image by storing the current display scale. Then the current display scale is automatically adjusted during modification of the image and in response to user completion of the modification the stored display scale is automatically returned. In a preferred embodiment, the velocity of a pointing device is measured and the display scale is adjusted as a function of the velocity of the pointing device during graphical modification and before the display of the image is re-centered on the pointing device position.

Vehicle chassis

We disclose a chassis for a vehicle, comprising an interconnected framework comprising a plurality of tubular sections, and at least one sheet bonded to the framework, wherein the tubular sections are of a non-ferrous metallic composition. The non-ferrous tubular sections have a very thin wall; generally, these sections are made by extrusion, which currently allows for wall thicknesses no thinner than about 2.5 mm. We prefer the wall thickness to be about this level, and ideally no greater than 3 mm. Such a thin-walled tube would usually imply a lower resistance to buckling, but as part of the structural element defined above, we have found that the tube does not buckle and in fact has an impact response that is superior to other alternatives. We therefore prefer that the tubular sections have a profile for which the ratio of the minimum area moment of inertia of its cross section to the square of the unsupported length of the section is less than 2 mm. Another way of expressing this approach is to consider the aspect ratio of the tubular section, i.e. the ratio of its length to its wall thickness. Sections with a high aspect ratio will be more prone to buckling. Given the low elastic modulus of Aluminium, a low aspect ratio has been preferred, but according to the present invention a higher aspect ratio of more than about 100 or 150 is feasible. 1.
