In general, a down-sampled color gradient (edge map) of an arbitrary sized ROI from a prior frame may be used to generate a small template. This initial template may be used to identify a region of a new or current frame that may be overscan and used to create a current frame's edge map. By comparing the prior frame's template to the current frame's edge map, a cost value or image may be found and used to identify the current frame's ROI center. The size of the current frame's ROI may be found by varying the size of putative new ROIs and testing for their congruence with the prior frame's template. Subsequent ROI's for subsequent frames may be identified to, effectively, track an arbitrarily sized ROI through a sequence of video frames.

According to some embodiments, improved stabilization of captured video frames is provided by intelligently harnessing the complementary effects of both optical image stabilization (OIS) and electronic image stabilization (EIS). A system of rate-distortion based packet selection and organization is used to maximize the quality of streamed media files that have been encoded using any conventional scalable encoder. A regenerative amplifier system that is optimized for low-gain gain media is provided. The system is configured to include a minimum number of intra-cavity elements while still eliminating the leakage of the seed pulses from the output beam. In addition, the contrast ratio of the amplified pulses is increased even considering the long build-up time that is required in low-gain regenerative amplifiers. This is accomplished using a single Pockels cell between the oscillator and amplifier to select a single seed pulse for the cavity, instead of using a Faraday isolator. This directs the unwanted seed pulses in a separate direction from the output pulse. When the amplified pulse exits the cavity, it is directed in a direction away from the oscillator by the same Pockels cell. Only one additional Pockels cell and one polarizer are required inside the regenerative amplifier cavity.

A novel approach to pixel-based registration of non-reference images to a reference frame in a set of commonly captured images is disclosed which makes use of pyramid decomposition to more efficiently detect corners. The disclosed pixel-based registration operation may also be combined with motion sensor data-based registration approaches to register non-reference images with respect to the reference frame. When the registered non-reference images are combined with the pre-selected reference image, the resulting image is a quality stabilized image.
