In a method of hot-rolling sections, such as H, T, or channel-section steel, the thicker elements of the section are cooled to decrease the temperature difference between the thicker and thinner elements. The cooling apparatus is preferably provided between the intermediate rolling mill and the finishing mill, but may be before the intermediate mill, and comprises (Fig. 3) a number of manually rotatable pipes 5 from which water is jetted on to the thicker flanges 3<SP>1</SP> of an H-section whilst the material is stationary. In a modification (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) for cooling the metal whilst it is moving, the jets of water are larger. In a specific example the temperature of the intermediate rolling mill is 1050‹ C., that of the finishing mill 900‹ C. and the difference in temperature between the thicker flanges and the thinner web of a steel H-section was reduced to 100‹ C.
