[Cognate Application, 23,696/13.] Gyroscopic apparatus.-An abutment or fulcrum in space to serve as a base from which to maintain resistance to a couple applied to a gyrostat is obtained by combining forced precession (i.e. rotation of the axis of spin in a plane perpendicular to the axis of the applied couple) and free precession (i.e. rotation of the axis of spin in a plane containing the axis of the applied couple) in a compound constrained precessional movement such as imposes no angular limit to the continued operation of the gyrostat as a source of resisting power, the gyrostat in its constrained precessional movement being always in, or on the way to recover, the operative position. In the form shown in Fig. 1, forced precession about the axis p1, p2 under the action of the weight W is accompanied by free precession about a rotating transverse axis resulting in a constrained precessional movement indefinitely continued around the ring R. In the form shown in Fig. 2, forced precession about a transverse axis under the action of the weight W is accompanied by a free precession about the longitudinal axis p1, p2 which is, however, suppressed by the free precession of the gyroscope G1 about a transverse axis, the descent of the weight W thus takes place against a constant resistance and an alternating couple is transmitted to the second gyroscope G1. The fulcrum in space obtained can be utilized in various ways by imparting forced precession to a gyroscope and loading the axis of free precession by a guide so that the forced precession imparts a turning movement to the guide opposite in direction to that of the forced precession by which it is imparted, i.e. in the same direction as the reaction through its support of the couple bringing about the forced precession. When using the device as a balancing-mechanism, a gyroscope arranged for free precession is combined therewith to prolong the period of oscillation or to protract the overturning movement sufficiently to allow the fulcrum device to act. The device may, inter alia, be used for steering a ship or for counteracting the rolling thereof; as a gyrostatic fly-wheel by driving it in constrained precession alternatively by the engine the running of which it controls and by a maintaining-power so arranged as to produce torque about an axis at right-angles to the axis of the engine shaft; as a governor to control a throttle valve; as power-transmitting mechanism taking advantage of the variation of the apical angle of the cone in which the axis of the precessing frame moves under varying loads on the driven shaft to vary automatically the stroke and so the power of the power cylinders.
