In a process for continuously coking coal, the coal is mixed with an alkali metal compound which will be completely vaporized during coking, e.g. K 2 SO 4 , and the mixture passed through a plurality of coke ovens to produce coke oven gas containing the vaporized compound which is recovered e.g. by scrubbing, from the gas. The K 2 SO 4 speeds up degassing of the coal during coking. An apparatus for shaping the coke may be interposed between two of the ovens. In an example, 0.1 to 1.5% b.w. K 2 SO 4 is mixed with the coal which is passed through two ovens heated respectively to 400‹ and 1100‹ C. Each oven is heated by circulating an inert heat-carrier through a heat exchanger heated by the combustion gases from an MHD generator in which the coke oven gas is burnt. The combustion gases also pre-heat air for the generator, and raise steam which circulates through a turbine which drives a blower for the air.
