An induction motor is decelerated by opening contactor 4 to disconnect a high-speed winding 1 and then closing contactor 5 to energize a low-speed winding 2. The contactor 5 has additional contacts 6 which close simultaneously with or before the closure of the other contacts of the contactor to connect capacitors 7 across the terminals of the high-speed winding 1. A braking effect is thereby produced since the high-speed winding is self-excited with lowfrequency currents. In another arrangement, the additional contacts are provided on the contactor 4 and are adapted to connect each of three capacitors across appropriate pairs of phases of the high-speed winding.
