In a carpet cleaner of the type in which a roller is impregnated with a foamable cleaning liquid the axle a of the roller b is mounted in horizontal slots c in end plates d so that at one or both reversals of movement of the apparatus one of two ribbed bars g is embedded in the roller b to generate foam and to deliver it to a brush i. Secured to the roller at at least one position along its length is a knurled wheel m which assists the roller to revolve freely as the apparatus is propelled by the handle f. Two sets of oppositely inclined ribs g<1> on the parts g give a more efficient spreading action. The cleaning liquid is supplied initially to the interior of the roller b through either of the two end inlets a having closure plugs k.
