A steel consists of:- C up to 0À025% Si 1À5 to 3À5% Al 1À5 to 6À0% the balance being Fe and normal steel making impurities and the combined Al and Si content being between 3À0 and 7.5%. In fabricating such steel into sheets and coils suitable for the manufacture of electrical equipment components it may be (a) brought to 2100-2500‹ F. by soaking, (b) rolled at 1600-2000‹ F. (c) slow cooled, (d) reheated to 2100-2500‹ F., (e) hot rolled at 1600- 1800‹F., (f) water cooled by spraying to below 1700‹ F., (g) pickled to remove scale, (h) annealed, (i) cold rolled, and (j) box annealed or continuously annealed at 1400-2100‹ F. The final annealing may be in a hydrogen or mixed hydrogen and nitrogen atmosphere or any inert gas atmosphere with a dew point between +6 and-26‹ F. By using an atmosphere containing a limited quantity of water vapour an electrically resistive continuously coherent and adherent coating composed of alumina, silica and iron oxide is produced on the alloy. The magnetic properties of samples were tested.
