Improvements in automatic temperature control systems for centrifuges

[Also in Division G3] An automatic control system for controlling the temperature of the rotor 13 of a centrifuging apparatus in which the rotor is housed in a partially evacuated chamber 16 provided with a cooling coil 21 through which a cooling fluid flows is provided with two temperature sensing elements in the form of thermistors 35, 45, the thermistor 35 being located in the rotor 13 and the thermistor 45 in the wall of the chamber 16, the thermistor 35 being connected in a bridge circuit WUYZ whereby the rotor temperature may be indicated and the thermistor 45 together with the thermistor 35 being included in a bridge circuit WXYZ thereby to control the cooling fluid flowing in the coil 21. The potentiometer 62 has a pointer 61 indicating the rotor temperature and is used in conjunction with a "null" indicating instrument 65. The two thermistors 35, 45 together with the position of the movable contact 75 of potentiometer 76, which indicates the rotor desired temperature, provide an input signal to an amplifier 77 the output of which, by way of a thyratron 79 and thermally responsive relay 82, controls a solenoid 86 which in turn controls a valve 87 in the cooling fluid supply line the thermistors being so arranged that when the discrepancy between the actual and desired rotor temperatures is large the thermistor 35 has the greater effect in the bridge circuit WXYZ whilst when the two temperatures are approaching coincidence the thermistor 45 becomes the more effective thus reducing or eliminating overshoot. In an alternative arrangement wherein it is desired to heat the rotor 13, the solenoid 86 is arranged to control a rotor heating device.
