[A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 27, 1935.] [Class 108 (iii)] A pneumatic shock-absorber particularly for vehicle suspensions comprises a deformable chamber which communicates with an auxiliary chamber freely when its volume I increases or decreases from its normal value and through a restricting device when its volume tends to return to its normal value, the restricting device being influenced during the latter change in volume by controlling means subjected to the substantially constant pressure of a fluid contained in a third chamber, which pressure is practically independent of the rapid variations in pressure in the deformable and auxiliary chambers. As shown in Fig. 1, the restricting device, comprising a barrel-shaped member 6 with flanged ends 8, 9 and apertures 7, 10, 11, is slidable in an opening 5 in a partition 4 which separates the deformable chamber 1 from the auxiliary and constant-pressure chambers 3, 16 respectively. A piston 14 having a small aperture 15 is connected by a rod 13 with the member 6. Normally the pressure in the three chambers is proportional to the weight of the vehicle. When movement of the piston 2 decreases the volume of the chamber 1 the flange 8 of the member 6 abuts the partition 4 and fluid flows comparatively freely through the apertures 7 into the chamber 3 raising the pressure therein, while the variation of pressure in the chamber 16 due to the slight volumetric displacement of piston 14 is comparatively negligible. On the return movement of piston 2 the high fluid-pressure in chamber 3 acts both on piston 14 and member 6 so that the flange 8 remains abutting partition 4, until the pressure in the chamber 1 equals that in the chamber 16. In a modification, Fig. 2, the partition 20 has inner and outer sets of apertures 22, 21 controllable by upper and lower discs 27, 23 pressed by springs 28, 25 which bear on collars 29, 26 fixed to a rod on which the discs are slidable, the rod being connected by a link 30 to a piston 31 similar to the piston 14 of Fig. 1. In another construction, Fig. 3, the piston 14, Fig. 1, is replaced by a diaphragm 44 supporting a rod 39 the lower end of which is guided by a spider 40. A valve 47 slidable on the rod 39 is adapted normally under the action of springs 48... 51 to close an aperture 38 in a partition 37 separating the deformable chamber 34 from the auxiliary and constantpressure chambers 36, 46 respectively. In a fourth construction, Fig. 4, valve members 52, 53 operate similarly to the discs 27, 23, Fig. 2, and stop pieces 54, 55 on the rod 56 of a piston 57 operate similarly to the collars 29, 26. The displacements of the piston 57 are limited by shoulders 58, 59.
