[Also in Group XXXVI] Welding by pressure.-The outer tubular conductor 49 of a coaxial electric cable is formed by bending a copper tape around the inner conductor 1 on which are assembled lobed insulating spacers. The insulated conductor 1 moves through the axis of a series of forming guides 51, and a strip of copper is progressively folded therearound to form a tube. As it approaches the final forming guide the tube is engaged by welding electrodes 52, 53, each in the form of an arm extending parallel with the tube axis, the inner electrode 53 being aligned with a gap between two lobes of each spacer. The process for forming the spacers on the conductor 1 entails intermittent movement of the cable, and the circuit to the electrodes is interrupted while the cable is.stationary. The tubular conductor 49 may have abutting or overlapping edges and the seam may be made by welding, soldering, cementing or folding.
