In a two-handed safety device for a cutting press a starting rod 12 pivoted to the fixed machine frame and extending over a vertically reciprocable presser arm 10 is depressed, to engage a clutch, by simultaneous actuation of a pair of handles 26, 28 on a plate 18, said plate being carried by a sleeve 14 rotatable on the end of the rod 12 and having an aperture through which passes an upright post 30 fixed in the reciprocable arm 10. A collar 32 slidable on the post 30 is held by a spring 34 against the plate 18 to bias it into a horizontal position. If only one handle is depressed the plate 18 is tilted and frictionally locks against the post 30 to prevent actuation of the clutch. The device is provided with a cover (not shown) through which the handles 26, 28 protrude. Specifications 22,023/1905 and 518,822 are referred to.
