To discriminate from textile materials containing nitrogen, the disposition of the concentration of nitrogen is sensed by an array of detectors and the circuitry responds to an area and concentration corresponding to four sticks of dynamite, Fig. 5 (not shown). As shown the apparatus is arranged for investigating luggage passing on a conveyor C. The thermal neutron flux is provided preferably by moderating a fast neutron source 24 such as californuim 252 which may be encapsulated in a moderator 25 and as shown is also buried in the test-chamber-walls 22, which contain a moderating material such as water or paraffin. The gamma-ray detectors comprise scintillator/photo-multiplier units also mounted in the walls and arranged with two large units 26 for estimating the total nitrogen content, followed by rows of small detectors 28 for estimating the disposition. Since thermal neutrons liberate high-energy x-rays (10.8 MeV) from N-compounds the comparators to which the detector outputs are fed, pass on only signals in excess of 10MeV. These signals are then processed by a computor to determine the concentration profile, Fig. 2 (not shown).
